Debunking Common Misconceptions About Registered Massage Therapy

August 6, 2023

Registered massage therapy (RMT) is a form of massage therapy that has been approved and regulated by the government. RMTs are trained and certified to provide therapeutic massages for the treatment of physical injuries, illnesses, and health conditions. Despite its popularity, there are still some common misconceptions about RMT floating around the internet. In this blog post, we’ll be debunking some of these myths so that you can have a better understanding of the facts surrounding registered massage therapy.

Myth 1: RMT includes sexual acts

This is one of the most pervasive myths out there regarding registered massage therapy. It is important to note that RMT does not include any kind of sexual act — no matter what kind. All forms of touching during an RMT session should always be done with the patient’s full consent for therapeutic purposes only. This means that any kind of sexual touch or manipulation is strictly against professional standards and therefore prohibited within an RMT session.

Myth 2: You don’t need a prescription for a registered massage therapist

Another myth is that you don’t need a prescription from your doctor before you seek out an RMT service. However, it may be beneficial to get a prescription if you plan on visiting an RMT multiple times as this may help cover some costs associated with the experience. Your healthcare provider would also be able to give advice on how many sessions may best suit your recovery needs as well as provide tips related to self-care which could complement your regular visits to an RMT practitioner.

Myth 3: All massage therapists perform registered massage therapy

It’s important to keep in mind that not all massage therapists are legally allowed to offer registered massage therapy services in Canada. Only those who have completed certain qualifications and met certain criteria set out by provincial governments can do so legally – meaning they possess both the technical skillset and client safety requirements needed for providing effective treatments in accordance with their scope of practice as laid out by their province's governing body.

Myth 4: It doesn’t require any special qualifications

The truth is quite the opposite—registered massage therapists require specialized knowledge and expertise in order to deliver safe and effective treatments to their clients. Before being able to offer these services, they must first obtain proper certification from their province's governing body as well as pass additional examinations/course work related to anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology, hydrotherapy, and other relevant topics (just to name a few). By going through this process, they gain invaluable knowledge which helps them assess clients safely while providing effective treatments tailored specifically towards each individual's needs or concerns— something which non-certified massagers simply cannot do effectively or safely due to lacking proper qualifications.,

Don’t let these misconceptions get in the way when seeking treatment from an experienced therapist!
